Privacy Policy

Folio is a reading feed for open-access research preprints. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. It is written to be plain and honest: Folio is built to collect as little as possible.

The short version

No account. You don't sign up or log in.
No tracking. No analytics, no advertising, no third-party trackers.
No data selling. Ever.
Your data stays on your device. Saved papers, tags, and settings are stored locally, not on our servers.

What the app stores on your device

Folio keeps the following on your device only (in local app storage):

Papers you save and the tags you add to them
Your feed preferences and app settings
If you enable AI features, the API key you enter (see below)

This information never leaves your device except as described under "Network requests" below. Deleting the app removes this data.

Network requests

To function, the app sends requests over the internet:

Research sources. To show you papers, the app fetches data from public open-access services: arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, OpenAlex, Europe PMC, and Semantic Scholar. These requests contain your search terms and the papers being loaded. They do not include your identity, and we attach no identifier to them. Each service has its own privacy practices.
Optional AI features. AI features are off by default. If you turn them on and provide your own Anthropic Claude API key, the app sends the relevant paper text (such as a title and abstract) and your prompts directly to Anthropic (api.anthropic.com) to generate summaries, answers, translations, and similar output. Your API key is stored only on your device and is used only to authenticate these requests to Anthropic. We never receive, store, or transmit your key. Anthropic's handling of this data is governed by Anthropic's own privacy policy and terms.

We do not operate a backend that receives your personal data in this build of the app.

Children's privacy

Folio does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The app requires no account and collects no personal data.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this page with a new effective date.
